Tour Plan
Day 01. Drive to Dharapani (1860M.): 8-9 hrs.
Our journey starts from Pokhara with 4 hours’ drive to Beshisahar by bus then drive again to Dharapani by Jeep on a winding road along the Marsyangdi River. On the way we admire terraced farms and beautiful huts. After reaching Dumre, we leave the previous trail and head north to Besisahar. From Beshisahar, we catch Jeep to Dharapani. Overnight in the lodge.
Meals included: Lunch Dinner
Day 02. Dharapani to Chame (2,710m): 5 – 6 hrs.
Today’s walk will be through a few forested ridges on our way to Chame, which is the head quarter of the Manang District. Throughout the trek we will have amazing views of snowcapped mountains including Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II, and Annapurna IV and we also come across small hot springs where we can dip in and soothe our aching muscles. Overnight in Chame.
Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Day 03. Chame to Pisang (3,300m.): 5 – 6 hrs.
From Chame, a steep and narrow path through a very dense forest will bring us to the dramatic curved rock face, rising 1500m from the river. This is probably the steepest part of the Marshyangdi Valley – so steep that the trail is carved into the vertical rock. After passing this last bit of rock, the valley opens up with majestic vistas. And right where the valley widens stands the Paungda Danda, a massive sloping rock face that rises over 5,000ft above the trail. We continue walking for a while before reaching Lower Pisang where we spend the night.
Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Day 04. Pisang to Ngawal (3660m.): 4-5 hrs.
There are two routes to Manang and we follow the trail that takes us to Upper Pisang via Ghyaru. This trail guarantees excellent views of the beautiful landscape and the mighty mountains including Annapurna and Pisang. We begin to notice a contrast in the landscape and vegetation from today. The cold and dry climate also creates a much harsher environment. Overnight in Ngawal.
Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Day 05. Ngawal to Manang (3540m.): 3-4 hrs.
After breakfast, we visit Sher Gumba and trek to Braga Monastery. Barga monastery is the largest monastery in the entire district of Manang. We will have nice views of beautiful mountains during our trek. Overnight at Manang.
Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Day 06. Manang – Acclimatization day
In order to keep fit on the trails that follow, we keep ourselves busy today with a short hike to either Bhojo Gumba or Gangapurna Lake. If we have the energy, we can even hike to Braga Village where we can visit the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) from where we can get some information about Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and other related matters.
Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Day 07. Manang to Yak Kharka (4,110m): 4 -5 hours
The trail crosses a stream, climbs to a village of Tenki and continues to climb out of the Marshyangdi Valley turning northwest up the valley of Jarsang Khola. The trail follows this valley northward, passing a few pastures and a scrub of juniper trees, as it steadily gains elevation. The trail further passes near the small village of Ghunsa, a cluster of flat mud roofs just below the trailhead. Now the trail goes through meadows where horses and yaks graze. After crossing a small river on a wooden bridge, the trail passes an ancient old Mani wall in a pleasant meadow and then reaches another small village of Yak Kharka. Overnight at Yak Karka.
Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Day 08. Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi (4,600m): 3 – 4 hours
Today’s trek is an uphill walk to Thorang Phedi. After some time we cross a suspension bridge and reach Ledar village. We ascend furthermore and pass through towering cliffs before reaching Thorang Phedi, the last village before Thorong La pass. On this trip we are rewarded with the best views of Mt. Gundang, Mt. Syagang, Thorung Peak and Mt. Khatungkan. The word Phedi in Nepalese is referred to as the foot of a mountain. Overnight in Thorong Phedi.
Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Day 09. Trek to Muktinath (3,800m) via Thorong La pass (5416m): 7 – 8 hours
Today is the most important day for this whole trek – Crossing Thorong La, one of the highest passes in the world. We will be crossing the pass from east to west (Manang to Muktinath) which is the easiest and safest direction. We get up around there in the morning and start walk up the mountain. When we finally make it to the top, we realize that our journey was worth it. We can take a few photos before heading to Muktinath Valley at the foot of the Thorong La. Muktinath is an important pilgrimage for both Hindus and Buddhists alike. In the evening, if we like, we pay our visit to a Vishnu Temple and a Gompa. Overnight in Muktinath.
Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
Day 10. Muktinath to Kagbeni via Jhong: 5-6 hrs. And drive to Jomsom
After breakfast in Muktinath, Descending from Ranipauwa village down the steep and barren hillside, we tumble down toward Kagbeni. Before arriving Kagbeni we visit Jhong, the village Jhong, is ancient capital of the region and makes an interesting side trip from Ranipauwa and Jharkot. The Tibetan culture and tradition is still intact. The fort is called Rabgyal Tse found around 14th century by Pondrung Throgyal, the great successor of Ame-Pal. In the past the chief used to control six villages of Muktinath valley from this fort. This ancient monastery was established in 16th century by Lo-Khenchen Sonam Lhundup. This is the main monastery of Jhong. After lunch in Kagbeni, we will drive an hour to Jomsom. The drive today is quite fantastic as we drive along a plateau above Kali Gandaki River, the world’s deepest gorge. The barren landscape of this area resembles Tibet. Finally we will arrive Jomsom, the head quarter of Mustang district from where we can fly to Pokhara the next day.
Meals included: Breakfast Lunch Dinner
